I selected the painting Autumn on the Hudson, 1861by George
Loring Brown to incorporate into a science lesson. This painting is a nature scene which
incorporates many scientific concepts related to nature and earth science. I could use this painting to talk about landscape
and climate. I could begin the lesson by
asking the class to identify which biome this painting represents and why. I noticed that there is an abundance of landforms
portrayed throughout the painting including mountains, river, beach, island etc. I could then ask students to identify as many
different landforms as they can in this painting individually. I would then ask students to do a think-pair-share
where they compare the landforms found. We
could then regroup as a class to report our findings. I believe this would be a great lesson and
teaching strategy because art and science are typically not related to one
another. This may help students who see
themselves as artistic gain a greater appreciation for science and how they can
incorporate science and artwork together.
Overall, I feel as though this would be a very engaging exercise in that
it is unique and strays from the norm but is still extremely relevant to
science.
