Overall, I really enjoyed the book clubs done in class,
and liked reading The Miscalculations of
Lightning Girl. I will reference
this book if I ever teach a math class since it introduces aspects of math in a
way that is engaging, applicable and fun for both myself and students. I found the book clubs to be very effective and
will use them in my content area.
However, I do not think I will ever assign an entire book; I think I would
be more likely to have students choose amongst informational articles or excerpts
from a book. I believe book clubs are an
excellent way for students to learn more and engage with literature that has to
do with topics that interest them. Book clubs
are also an exceptional way for students to interact with their peers about a topic
and be able to expand on their knowledge through this collaboration. I believe students will find book clubs to be
a fun classroom activity and feel as if they have more freedom and choices
which I know is important to young adolescents.
On the other hand, I do feel that book clubs need to be managed well as
stated in Subjects Matter and through
our discussions in class. I know as a
future teacher I especially need to be mindful of group formation and time management
with regards to this activity. I can see
how this activity may take up too much class time or promote issues and
ineffectiveness if groups are not formed carefully. In general, I feel book clubs are an excellent
class activity and will be sure to implement them in my future classrooms.
